It’s winter break, and I decided to download a trial of Photoshop CS4.

It’s bloody amazing and I don’t know how I lived without it.

I’ve made a few things, but mostly have been playing around with all the shiny new features and tools. Today, I decided to make a new wallpaper for my phone. I wanted to keep it simple but still make it appealing to the eye. After messing with brushes and some very bright colors, I produced this:

FRACTAL in cyan

Which was followed by this:

FRACTAL in yellow

And this:

FRACTAL in magenta

After deciding that CMYK is the coolest color scheme out there, I made three more.

Whee! The little survey over at A Noodle in a Haystack has been floating around the classic film blogosphere lately, and it looked pretty fun. So I’m doing it here. :3

1. What is your all-time favorite Clark Gable movie? Gone With the Wind! My love for that movie knows no bounds.

2. Do you like Joan Crawford best as a comedienne or a drama-queen? Most definitely drama queen. The only comedy I’ve seen of hers, Love on the Run, was like a bad version It Happened One Night. But I probably just need to see more of her comedies. Anyways, I consider her dramas to be winrars~~ ^^ Mildred Pierce is one of my favorite movies ever.

3. In your opinion, should Ginger Rogers have made more musicals post-Fred Astaire? Mmm…maybe. I like her post-Fred non-musicals enough that it doesn’t really make a difference to me.

4. I promise not to cause you bodily (or any other serious) harm if you don’t agree with me on this one. So please be honest: do you like Elizabeth Taylor? Hm? Yes! She’s adorable. I love reading her twitter.

5. Who is your favorite offscreen Hollywood couple? I would ~typically~ say Bogart and Bacall, but lately, they have become my second-favorite. Thanks, Clark and Carole! XD

6. How about onscreen Hollywood couple? Bill Powell and Myrna Loy! Their chemistry was PERFECT.

7. Favorite Jean Arthur movie? You Can’t Take It With You – even though every time I watch it, I get super jealous of Jean, especially in this scene. ILY SO MUCH JIMMY.

8. What was the first Gregory Peck movie you saw? To Kill a Mockingbird. That movie and I, we go way back.

9. What film made you fall in love with Alfred Hitchcock? (And for those of you that say, “I don’t like Hitchcock” — what is wrong with you?!) Are there really people out there that don’t like Hitchcock? D:< Anyways, to answer the question, Notorious .

10. What is your favorite book-to-movie adaption? See question #1.

11. Do you prefer Shirley Temple as a little girl or as a teenager?

I don’t prefer Shirley Temple!

14. Who is your favorite of Cary Grant’s leading ladies? Ingy Ingy Ingy Ingy Ingy! Oh and um Katharine Hepburn.

15. Bette Davis or Joan Crawford? What a cliche question! 哈哈哈哈 Sorry. But I like them both D: Can I choose both?

16. What actors and/or actresses do you think are underrated? Olivia de Havilland. Greer Garson. Aww.

17. What actors and/or actresses do you think are overrated? MARILYN MONROE. Blaaah! I see her face everywhere! And it sort of upsets me that she gets so much attention when there are undoubtedly better classic actresses out there… So basically, you can throw James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Audrey Hepburn into that same category. (Although I like Audrey. *points to header*)

18. Do you watch movies made pre-1980 exclusively, or do you spice up your viewing-fare with newer films? I like pre-1960 movies ONLY!

19. Is there an actor/actress who you have seen in a film and immediately loved? If so, who? Bogart and Bacall in The Big Sleep. They made me love old movies. <3 Oh and um William Powell in The Thin Man. (I already loved Minnie. ^^)

20. Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire? I always feel bad for Gene because more people say Fred.

23. Favorite actress? Aaaah so difficult to choose one! My favorites change all the time. Right now, though, it’s Ingrid Bergman (my number one forever~), Hedy Lamarr, and Carole Lombard~

25. Favorite actor?Again, why must “actor” be singular? D: Well my favorite of all time is Cary Grant, but right now, I’m loving Robert Taylor and Clark Gable as well~

(笑) I love Japan so much. ^_^

Anyways, moving on.

I’m over a month late, but I’m still amazed by TCM’s Summer Under the Stars posters for this year. These posters are some of the best graphic work I’ve ever seen. Even the ones that I don’t really care for — Beat the Devil, The Conversation, and The Magnificent Seven, methinks — are well done. I know I cannot make anything like them. Personal picks below the cut.

The vibrant blue and subtle clouds totally fit the mood of this film. Hitch would have designed this himself. I also love the diamond dotting the “i” in the title. But look, guys! Old Cary Grant is sparkling!

Y HALO THAR, IDA LUPINO. She’s so hot, she set this poster afire. That’s why it looks burned.

I’m not too keen on the font, but I am digging the color scheme. And I’ve never, ever, ever thought of Glenn Ford as a handsome guy, but…wow. This poster, with its perfect contrast and use of the burn tool, could probably make any man look attractive. (But where’s teh Love Goddess? D:)

Apart from that little notation I made at the bottom, this is genius. It’s so simple, but the black and white plates give hints to the historic movie’s once-controversial theme. Symbolism fyay!

I love the shininess of this poster, and the panels with the actors – they just seem to pop. Plus, there’s that adorable purse at the bottom! Do want! *Vintage fashion lover loves vintage fashion*

By the way, I saw this movie last week and it was awesome. Lubitsch FTW.

Boy her head is big.

Has anyone else noticed the way the furs around Jean’s neck sort of look like flames coming out of the plane? Yeeeeh!

The one in which Marion Davies is glowing.

I really like the subtle gradient in “show” and how “people” stands out against the turquoise. The contrast in the type is my favorite thing about this whole poster. But the typefaces get better…

I have a bias against 60s films, and almost didn’t post this one here. But I chose to post it, partially because I secretly want to watch this movie. XD

The type on this poster is so pretty! I love how it looks like it was written in crayons. It fits with the playful aspect of Dr. Strangelove; making a satire out of something supposed to be serious.

Just noting this one because it has Bette Davis, who is brilliant beyond words and needs to be noted. For The Letter, I actually like the teaser a lot more. Like the Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner poster, it’s simply made, but there’s beauty in its simplicity. The blood staining her hand and the envelope really make you want to see the movie.

Is it just a coincidence that my nickname for Claudette Colbert is Over 9000? XD Since she is that amazing, you know.

(But I know hurricanes and tropical storms can be serious, so I hope the hurricane season isn’t too destructive this year.)

In lieu of photoshop, I’ve taken up painting and drawing in my spare time. Granted, most of my paintings and drawings aren’t very good, but it’s nice to have a ~creative outlet~ .

I drew a rose, based on this photo. Of all my mediocre crap that reeks of no experience, it’s turned out to be the best thing. It was all a matter of shading~

But due to my dumb scanner, it doesn’t scan correctly (way overexposed) and I can’t post it. I tried to adjust it at LunaPic (ha, ha!) but nothing could save it. D:

However, I do have today a painting of my Shining Stars parrot, Parry Grant.

This scanned badly too, but I was able to fix it up. A little…

It’s just as much a drawing as it is a painting; I began by drawing an outline in regular pencil and adding his furry texture by drawing many small lines with colored pencil. After that, I simply watercolored over the whole thing. Oh! I also used glitter glue to add the shiny applique on his foot. (That last detail looks better in person.)

It looks like this in real life.

Anyways, this is my new favorite song.

I just remembered that Morning Musume has been about 400 miles away from me for the past three days (as opposed to the normal 6000 or so). And I haven’t seen them perform.

And a really good photo of Gary Cooper is not saving to my hdd.

And, once more, I don’t have access to Paint Shop/Photoshop. It’s very bothersome. I should really download a trial and get more graphics on here because the theme of this blog is shifting, and I don’t want it to change….

And I’m not watching fireworks this evening because, well, to put it briefly, shit happens.

1. I like learning about the French Revolution. Ever since I learned about it in history this year, I’ve found it to be so interesting! Maybe my fascination has something to do with a really good video we watched about it. And I’m making a drapeau tricolore cake for Bastille Day this year. ^___^

2. I think Korean is the prettiest language, followed by Japanese, German, and Russian. It seems many people say they’re harsh sounding, especially the latter two – but I love to hear them. I also think English is ugly. XP

3. I don’t consider movies from the 1960s classic. Except a few, like The Apartment, Breakfast at Tiffanys, To Kill a Mockingbird, West Side Story, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, and a couple others. I feel like the ’60s was when movies began to get bad. They don’t hold a candle to the films of the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s in my opinion. And don’t get me started on those awful beach party movies…

Don’t hurt me! *Runs away from angry ’60s fans*

4. I love rave! I listen to it all the time when I’m hyper, or just in a really good mood. I’m listening to it right now… there are castles in the air~ ♪

5. I use the word “kawaii” to describe just about everything. Kawaii is the Japanese word for cute. It makes me sound like a weaboo (and I absolutely can’t stand weaboos), but I don’t care, it’s such a…nice… word. xD

6. I’m not caught up on my classic Disney movies. If anyone knew that in real life, they’d judge me. ;_; One time, I was with people who were talking about Cinderella and Snow White and Bambi and all that, and I just sort of sat there…. I did, however, watch black-and-white Mickey Mouse cartoons as a kid. So HA.

7. The 400m race is my favorite. Everyone I know thinks it’s a pain to run, but I love it. XD Prehaps it’s because I finished second in that event at the city finals last track season?

8. I have a bit of a crush on Paul Henreid. I think he’s absolutely adorable. Secret because wtf self, it’s Paul Henreid!

9. I don’t want a cake for my birthday this year. I want a WATERMELON. La la la health nut.

10. I had a dream a couple nights ago where I went out on a date with Fred Astaire and Ginger tagged along. XDD I wanted him to take me out to dinner, but he took me to an ugly park instead. Oh, and Ginger and I were best friends by the end of the dream. Again, wtf self? I’m so weird. D:

ILY FRED, but…no.

And a speshul added bonus: I participated in the school geography bee – twice. I also made it to the finals – twice, though I never was champion. Haha, you probably think I’m a big social studies nerd based on this and the first two facts. And you’re right! :D
